Safety Kleen - Make Green Work
Safety

Everyone at Safety-Kleen shares a strong belief that accidents and injuries are unacceptable in our operations. The overall benefits of world-class safety practices include reduced costs and improved morale while providing a safer work environment for all employees. Our goal is to be considered one of the safest places to work in the North American "service" industry.

EMR Achievement
With an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 1.00 being average, our EMR clearly reflects we are a company that is far better than average. In the past six years, we have seen a continued improvement in our EMR going from a .77 in 2002 to a .46 in 2008. Safety-Kleen's commitment to safety has vaulted us from being 23% better than other companies in our industry to being 54% better and demonstrates our continued efforts for improvement in this area.

East Chicago used oil re-refinery achieves 2 million hours without a lost time injury
Congratulations to the East Chicago Oil Re-Refinery, who in March 2008, exceeded 2 million hours without a Lost Time Accident. The East Chicago Re-Refinery accumulated over 2 million man hours without a lost time accident over a time span of more than 11 years.

"Two million hours without a lost time injury is a significant milestone and reflects the commitment of every employee in our plant," said East Chicago Refinery Manager Scott Miller. "This has been a complete team effort."

Breslau refinery achieves 2 million hours without a lost time injury
In December of 2006, the employees at Safety-Kleen's Breslau Used Oil Re-Refinery also surpassed a significant milestone in safety performance by accumulating over 2 million manhours without a lost time accident over a time span of more than 11 years.

Breslau Re-Refinery Manager Michael Puersten credits a safety conscious culture established at all levels and in all departments of the facility. "This has been a team effort," says Puersten. "A focus on safety has been incorporated into everyday tasks with people actively and routinely looking for ways to improve procedures and equipment to protect the safety of themselves and their fellow workers."

What is more remarkable is that this safety milestone was achieved while maintaining excellence in all areas of the Breslau operation, including reaching record production levels and demonstrating a high standard of quality through an ISO-9001:2000 certification.
